This race was unique in that it started with a long flat paddle meaning all teams were on a level playing field. A the end of stage one, after a 10km paddle, the Flying Kiwis were able to finish close to 1km in front of the rest of the field. What makes this boat unique is that it is a fast boat while being a self bailer. Other boats on the market that may be fast on the flat, are significantly slower on white water as they require emptying out after going through rapids.
